Your rack works outdoors. Mud, road salt, weather, cargo, and daily use all take a toll on its finish. Powder coat is a durable barrier on steel, but it needs care. Give your rack at least the attention you give your vehicle's paint, and more when it sees harsh conditions.
Wash it. Protect it. Inspect it. Touch it up.
Powder coat durability starts long before the powder is applied. Over the years, HMOR has tried several methods of preparing fabricated steel for coating, including hand sanding, machine sanding, and abrasive blasting. Through our own experience and customer feedback, abrasive blasting has provided the best coating adhesion and longest-lasting results for our products. It is the preparation method we use today.
Abrasive blasting thoroughly cleans the steel and creates a consistent surface profile that gives the powder coating a better foundation to bond to. After preparation, HMOR parts are also double-coated to build a substantial protective barrier across the surface of the steel.
Even with thorough surface preparation and two coats of powder, complex fabricated parts still present a challenge around sharp edges. HMOR racks contain a tremendous amount of cut geometry, including slots, holes, mounting openings, formed corners, and exposed cut edges. Powder naturally builds more heavily across broad, flat surfaces than it does around sharp edges. During application and curing, the coating can remain thinner at these locations.
That is why HMOR puts significant effort into preparation and coating before the rack ever reaches the customer, but proper maintenance still matters once it enters the real world.
We put the work into giving the coating the strongest foundation we have found. Regular cleaning, protection, inspection, and touch-up are what help preserve that protection for years to come.
HMOR ROCK-IT Racks and many accessories have a lot of cut geometry: slots, holes, mounting openings, formed corners, cut profiles, and overlapping parts. Those features make the system useful and adjustable. They also create far more edges and contact points than a simple tube rack or a smooth vehicle body panel.
Powder coat generally builds a more continuous protective film across broad, flat surfaces than directly on sharp edges. On an edge, coverage can be thinner after application and cure. That is a known challenge with powder-coated fabricated steel, especially around cut openings. A clean-looking flat face does not tell you how every slot edge or hardware contact point is doing.
Give those areas a closer look when you wash. Sufficient, continuous coating helps keep moisture and contaminants off steel; piling on more coating everywhere is not a substitute for sound preparation, proper application, and maintenance.
Rinse loose grit first. Wash with clean water and a mild, pH-neutral automotive wash soap using a soft mitt, microfiber cloth, or soft brush that can reach the slots. Rinse thoroughly, including the undersides, joints, and places where dirt collects. Let the rack dry before covering a damaged spot or applying protection.
Use a soap intended for routine washing of modern automotive paint, and check its label. A harsh wheel cleaner, strong degreaser, or stripping wash is a different product even if it is sold for cars. Avoid acetone, lacquer thinner, paint stripper, strong acids or alkalis, harsh abrasives, scouring pads, and cutting or polishing compounds. Test any unfamiliar cleaner in a hidden area first.
After the rack is clean and dry, consider a suitable automotive wax or paint sealant for the finish. A compatible spray wax or protective quick detailer can also help, but these products vary widely in durability. Follow the product's directions and reapply as needed. One application is not permanent protection, and a wax or sealant cannot repair a chip or replace missing coating.
Check the finish when you wash: does it still shed water in the way your chosen protectant normally does, and is dirt still easy to remove? Those are useful clues, not proof that every edge remains protected. Use the protectant maker's reapplication guidance as a starting point, then adjust for weather, washing, and wear. On matte, textured, or semi-gloss powder coat, do not assume a conventional gloss-finish wax or detailer is suitable. Some products can leave residue or change the sheen. Choose one labeled for that type of finish and test a small hidden area first.
Make a quick visual check about once a month as a baseline and after hard use. Focus on cut edges, slots, holes, corners, mounting locations, bolts and washers, overlaps, accessory contact points, and anywhere straps or cargo rub. Look for chips, worn coating, trapped dirt, standing moisture, or rust-colored marks. Remove accessories when needed to inspect a hidden contact area. Give the edges more attention than the easy-to-see flat faces.
If bare steel is exposed, deal with it promptly. Even a small chip gives water and salt a place to reach the steel. Do not wait for visible rust.
For small chips and scratches on black HMOR products using the BK08 finish, our Powder Coat Touch-up Paint is a convenient color-matched brush-on option. It is an air-dry acrylic touch-up, not a new layer of oven-cured powder coat and not a full-rack refinishing solution.
Start with a monthly visual inspection. Use the actual dirt and exposure on your rack to decide when to wash; these are practical triggers, not a guarantee that one interval works in every climate.
Road salt and liquid de-icers can remain in slots, under brackets, and between parts long after a drive. Flush those areas with clean water as soon as reasonably practical after meaningful exposure. Wash stubborn deposits with mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and check the rack again once it is dry. Keep doing this through the winter whenever exposure repeats, and renew your chosen protectant when needed. A single spring wash does not undo a season of salt deposits.
ASTM B117 describes a controlled salt-fog test environment used to compare corrosion behavior of metal and coated-metal specimens. A coating system may be tested for hundreds or thousands of hours under specified laboratory conditions. 1,000 hours in a test chamber does not equal any particular number of years on your truck. Real racks see changing weather, UV, abrasion, road chemicals, damage, and different levels of care. Test hours are useful context for a specified coating system and test method, not a countdown to real-world rust.
There is no honest single number. A well-maintained powder-coated rack can look excellent for many years. A neglected rack exposed to salt, moisture, abrasion, or damaged edges can deteriorate much sooner. Two identical racks can look very different after years of service depending on climate, storage, cleaning, accessories, and how promptly chips were repaired.
That variability is why HMOR's limited lifetime warranty and return policy excludes paint, powder coating, and other coatings. The warranty covers qualifying defects in materials and workmanship under its terms; this care guide helps you protect the finish in the conditions you actually drive through. Complete stripping, preparation, and recoating of a large slotted rack takes significant work. Regular cleaning and small repairs are much easier.
